Betton Hills Neighborhood Association
October 6, 2010
NOTE: The Board meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month until further notice as the Ashford Club meeting room is not available on Thursdays.
Tom Schulte called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Attendees included Tom Schulte, Tom Vickers, Dean Hansen, Margie McInnes, Eric Thorn, Bonnie Gaughan-Bailey, Mary Kay Falconer, Mike Brezin and Melissa Jacoby.
The September 2, 2010 minutes were approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership: Tom Vickers reported that there was no activity during September.
Website: No report.
Neighborhood Preservation: Tom Schulte reported that David Barr Gibbs is still in the area and attempting to solicit jobs and money. Tallahassee Police advise that Barr has an extensive criminal history in South Carolina and residents are cautioned to report his presence to TPD.
Treasurer’s Report: Margie McInnes reported that there was no activity during September. Balance as of October 6 remains $5,382.
Newsletter: Mike Brezin reported that the newsletter is at Target Copy of printing and mailing. An article on illegal fishing will be held for the next newsletter.
Welcoming Committee: Dean Hansen reported no activity. He will solicit committee members at the annual meeting.
CONA: Melissa Jacoby attended the September 13 CONA delegate meeting. Topics of discussion included community gardens, neighborhood preservation and crime. Candidates Karen Gievers, Barbara Hobbs and Stephen Hogge were present. Melissa informed them of the BHNA annual meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
October 24 Annual Meeting: Margie McInnes reserved the Winthrop park pavilion. The Leon Steel Band is confirmed to perform. Cost is $300. Other tasks were divided among the Board: Margie—paper products; Dean—ice cream, cones, ice; Tom Schulte—drinks; Bonnie, Dean and Tom Vickers—large coolers; Tom Schulte—contact Andy Fink to arrange for signs; Melissa—banner; Tom Vickers and Melissa—staff membership table. Bonnie is participating in a Tallahassee leadership group. She will contact city departments about setting up informational tables at the meeting. Tami Frankland will be contacted to see if she will arrange for children’s games.
Candidates for local office will be advised of the meeting and the opportunity to meet BHNA residents: Bonnie—Cliff Thaell; Mike—Nancy Miller and Melissa—Nick Maddox. Karen Gievers, Barbara Hobbs and Stephen Hogge were told of the BHNA meeting at the September 13 CONA meeting.
The BHNA slate of officers will be presented at the meeting. Tom Vickers agreed to continue as membership chair; Margie McInnes will continue as treasurer and Melissa Jacoby will continue as secretary. Members were asked to identify a candidate for president.
Eric Thorn reported that additional ‘no fishing’ signs were erected at Harriman Pond. Dean Hansen reported fish to restock the pond have not yet been delivered.
NEW BUSINESS
Vicky Schwartz agreed to represent BHNA at October 7 Partners for Excellence Kickoff and Recognition Ceremony.
Mary Kay Falconer volunteered to compile names of BHNA volunteers and suggestions received with the annual dues notice.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:35 p.m.
