Betton Hills Neighborhood Association Minutes
February 7, 2007
Chair Dean Hansen called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.
Attendees were: Dean Hansen, Kathy Moulton, Melissa Jacoby, Margie McInnes, Mary Kay Falconer, Tom Vickers, Tom Schulte, Elizabeth Jensen, Bill Jones, and Mike Brezin. Guests: Jamie Bertoch and Eric Smith (new Betton Hills resident)
Jamie Bertoch, visitor, presented his request for BHNA support for the placement of a picnic table and a few trees in one of Betton’s parks in memory of his deceased mother. After some discussion, the best location seems to be the south end of Winthrop Park. Mike Brezin moved that that BHNA request that the city select a place to put the items within Winthrop Park. Margie seconded. Kathy Moulton volunteered to help with the site placement.
Dean reviewed the minutes from last meeting. Tom Schulte moved for approval, Mary Kay seconded and the minutes were approved unanimously.
Dean requested a volunteer to attend the CONA meeting on 2/11. Mary Kay mentioned she could email Bonnie, our CONA representative. Melissa volunteered to attend the meeting.
Dean next mentioned that a statewide neighborhood meeting would be held in Tallahassee on 6/26-6/28. The board decided that BHNA will pay the $45 entry fee for up to two people. Margie made the motion, Elizabeth seconded, and the vote was unanimous. We’ll seek volunteers at the next meeting.
Dean summarized the Treasurer’s report (see attached). Our balance is $7,723.37. Tom Vickers moved for approval; Mary Kay seconded; measure passed unanimously.
Tom Vickers presented the membership report. Dues have been received from 339 members. This pace is below last year at this time, when we had 394.
Elizabeth reported on the newcomer’s committee. 18 packages were presented to new residents. Margie baked good cookies for the packages and Dean led the effort to get gifts from local stores.
We discussed Arbor Day plans. New plantings will be primarily in McCord Park, near the existing plantings. We wil also clean bird boxes, mulch existing plants, plant a Satsuma orange in Chittenden Park, and plant some blue-eyed grass at the island on Betton.
Mary Kay reported that the scene of the yard sales on Armistead has removed one out-building.
Dean reported we haven’t heard anything new regarding the outbuilding issue on Lee Ave.
Kathy requested that the BHNA write a letter of thanks to the city for the improvements to the Winthrop Park tennis courts. Kathy volunteered to write the letter and Mary Kay said she’d help get the letter on BHNA letterhead.
Mary Kay reported that she had helped residents on Trescott identify a city representative to consider removing some trees that border their property but are located in the Betton cemetery. After some board discussion regarding the interests of BHNA in this effort, Dean indicated he would bring the issue up with the Riley House Museum due to its involvement with the cemetery.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Mike Brezin, Acting Secretary
