Minutes of BHNA Board Meeting

September 6, 2007

Chairman Mary Kay Falconer called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.

Attendees included: Tom Vickers, Mary Kay Falconer, Mike Brezin, Donna Legare, Dean Hansen, Margie McInnes, Andy Grayson, Bonnie Gaughan-Bailey, and Elizabeth Jenson. Sarah Bradner attended as a guest.

Mary Kay shared the response from Star Metro regarding the BHNA letter addressing the termination of route 16.  This possibility was brought to our attention by residents on Woodgate Way.  Mary Kay also reminded the board that a plaque will be installed in the median on Betton Road to honor former BHNA President and Board Member Philip Froemke.  Mr. Froemke recently moved out of the neighborhood.

The August minutes were approved as distributed.

Donna read a thank you note from Holly Kennedy, band director at Cobb Middle School, for our $325 contribution.

Tom Vickers reported no changes in membership during the prior month.

Elizabeth provided an update on the welcome committee activities and said she will send welcome kits to the estimated 8-9 new residents. She also thanked Dean Hanson for soliciting donations from 20 merchants. There was a discussion regarding the recognition of merchants for their donations to BHNA activities.  In the past year, Mary Kay mentioned that a certificate was prepared and delivered to several merchants in the neighborhood.  Merchants were also listed in the summer BHNA newsletter.  For the recent donations, the merchants will be recognized in the Fall newsletter.

A resident, Sarah Bradner, shared her ideas regarding preparation for neighborhood disasters and said that she would be willing to develop a database of people in the neighborhood to use in a state of emergency. Mary Kay explained that BHNA has participated in Red Cross disaster preparedness exercises for neighborhoods over the past 2 years.   We have also highlighted the importance of being prepared for emergencies on the BHNA website.  The board agreed to continue to promote the importance of being prepared on our website, to include a short article in the fall newsletter, and to support recruiting volunteers to assist with being prepared for disasters at the annual meeting in October.

A suggestion was made to promote the kiosk in McCord Park as a central location to post information regarding both lost and found missing pets. Dean Hansen mentioned a McCord Pond clean-up that was scheduled for September 16.

Mike indicated that the deadline for the Fall Newsletter is September 15th.

Discussion turned to the Annual Meeting, which will be from 4 to 5:30 on October 14th  at Winthrop Park. We agreed to ask the Leon Steel Drum Band to perform and will plan details and delegate assignments at the October board meeting. Mary Kay mentioned that there might be interest from a local merchant to cover some of the expenses for the annual meeting.

Mary Kay reported on activity regarding amendments to the Local Government Comprehensive Plan and amendments to the subdivision ordinance passed earlier this year. None of the proposed changes in the local government comprehensive plan or the amendments passed for the subdivision ordinance will affect our neighborhood.  She also reported that a plat application has been re-submitted to subdivide a lot on Lee Avenue into two, rather than five in the previous application.  At this time, the neighborhood is not opposed. Tom Schulte was asked to monitor the subdivision for BHNA.

Mary Kay reminded Board members to attend the Storm Water Forum on Saturday, September 8th, in McCord Park.

Bonnie said that she would be willing to be BHNA’s representative to CONA.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at approximately 8:45 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

Peter Butzin, Secretary
