Minutes of BHNA Board Meeting

August 2, 2007

Chairman Mary Kay Falconer called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.

Attendees included: Tom Vickers, Mary Kay Falconer, Philip Froemke, Mike Brezin, Tom Schulte, Vicky Schwartz, Donna Legare, Dean Hansen, Andy Fink and Elizabeth Jenson. Tom and Pat Whitaker, 1607 Woodgate Way attended as guests.

The Whitaker’s, who have a disabled daughter who rides the Star Metro bus each day to work, expressed concern that the city has proposed to eliminate route 16. They requested that BHNA prepare a letter to the City supporting retention of route 16. A motion was passed authorizing Mary Kay to prepare the letter in support of the bus route and other bus routes as they relate to providing transportation of disabled citizens.

The June minutes were approved as distributed.

Donna reported that BHNA’s account balance is $3,399. Expenses associated with the soon-to-be distributed summer newsletter will be reflected on the next report. The report was approved.

Tom Vickers reported that BHNA has 420 aid members. 464 labels were printed for the summer newsletter mailing.

Elizabeth Jensen reported that only 4 new neighbors moved into the neighborhood and were welcomed by her committee during the period from April through July. Her committee will continue to welcome new neighbors, and Dean will solicit additional gifts from neighborhood businesses.

The City is planning a Storm Water Educational Forum on Saturday, September 8th, beginning at 9 AM at McCord Park. The event will cover water quality and storm water management.

The median on Betton Road (new Trescott) needs maintenance. Dean will ask Sally Zeeger, who lives near the island, if she would be willing to maintain it. Thanks were expressed to Andy Fink and his family for maintaining the islands on lower Woodgate Way.

There has been no recent activity regarding the non-compliant outbuildings at the resident on the corner of Armistead and Thomasville Roads. The owner is paying the fines imposed by the City. Although the outbuildings have been cited as being non-compliant, there is no city ordinance that regulates yard sales.  BHNA will monitor future yard sale activity to determine whether we should seek an ordinance that would regulate yard sales.

The CONA-led effort to pass an ordinance supporting neighborhood preservation will not come up for a vote until August 29th.

Mary Kay indicated that a new nominee for BHNA president is needed. Also, each BHNA board member will be contacted to see if he or she wishes to remain on the board.

Dean noted that many trees in our neighborhood have been lost due to recent weather and storm events. 6 trees were lost in McCord Park. Dean proposes that we replace these trees during Arbor Day. People who lost trees are encouraged to replace them, with possible assistance from BHNA.

Donna proposed tours of neighborhood gardens later in the Fall. She suggested that up to 3 yards, in relatively close proximity, be toured on a Friday evening from 6-8 PM.

Mike Brezin proposed that we honor Philip Froemke for his tireless efforts on behalf of the neighborhood. He suggested that we name one of the traffic islands in his honor.  Although no action was taken, everyone agreed to the suggestion.

There being no further business to come before the board, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

Vickie Schwartz, Acting Secretary
